When particle size distribution drifts or throughput drops on a mill that used to perform fine, the cause is usually one of a handful of wear or process issues rather than a fundamental equipment fault. Here's what to check first.

1. Worn Grinding Elements

Hammers, pins, or blades wear unevenly over operating hours, and a worn element produces a coarser, wider particle size distribution even at the same throughput setting. If particle size has been drifting coarser gradually rather than suddenly, worn elements are the first thing to check.

2. Screen Wear or Blinding

A worn screen aperture (enlarged from abrasion) lets oversize material through; a blinded screen (blocked by moist or fine material building up in the apertures) restricts flow and can cause overheating or reduced throughput. Inspect the screen directly — wear and blinding look different and point to different fixes (replacement versus cleaning or a screen aperture change).

3. Feed Rate Inconsistency

A mill fed unevenly — surging then starving — produces inconsistent particle size even with fresh grinding elements, because the mill's internal conditions change with feed load. Check upstream feed control (screw feeder speed, hopper bridging, surge in supply) before assuming the mill itself is at fault.

4. Heat Buildup

Excess heat — from prolonged running, a mismatched mill type for the material, or restricted airflow — can cause material to soften, smear, or cake onto internal surfaces, degrading both particle size consistency and throughput. This is particularly relevant for heat-sensitive materials on hammer or pin mills; persistent heat issues may point to needing a cutting mill or added cooling airflow rather than a mechanical fault.

5. Bearing or Drive Wear

Unusual noise, vibration, or reduced rotational speed under load typically points to bearing or drive-train wear rather than the grinding mechanism itself. Left unaddressed, this accelerates wear on grinding elements and screens as the rotor loses its true running clearance.
