Intermediate bulk containers look like a simple, standardised piece of packaging — but the wrong specification for your material or process causes real, recurring problems: outlet valves that leak or clog, containers incompatible with what's actually inside them, and transfer or filling steps that take far longer than they should.
Where IBC Handling Breaks Down
Outlet valve mismatched to viscosity or flow rate. A DN50 outlet moving a higher-viscosity material or needing faster discharge than it's sized for turns every transfer into a bottleneck — while an oversized outlet on a lower-viscosity material increases spillage risk during connection and disconnection.
Material incompatibility with the inner container. Standard HDPE inner containers aren't compatible with every chemical — the wrong pairing risks degradation of the container, product contamination, or both, sometimes not obvious until well after the container has been filled and moved.
Temperature exceeding container rating. Filling or storing material above the container's continuous temperature rating risks softening or deforming the HDPE inner container — a real risk for hot-fill processes that don't check this against the IBC spec first.
Reusing containers without proper cleaning validation. IBCs are designed to be reusable, but carryover contamination between different products is a real risk without a validated cleaning process — particularly relevant for food, pharmaceutical, or multi-product operations sharing a container pool.
Stacking without checking load rating. IBCs are typically rated for 2–3 units stacked, but stacking beyond that rating, or stacking filled containers on a pallet not designed for the load, risks structural failure and product loss.
Where the Right IBC Specification Fits

These containers suit oils, resins, fatty acids, syrups, chemicals, solvents, and dry flowable powders — but they're not the right fit for highly viscous materials that need pump-assisted transfer, materials exceeding 80°C continuously, or substances incompatible with HDPE. Getting this compatibility check done before committing to a container spec avoids a costly mismatch discovered after the fact.
