That makes reduced magnetic strength one of the easiest problems to miss operationally: the separator keeps running, keeps capturing some ferrous material, and nothing looks obviously wrong on the line, right up until a contamination incident or a failed audit reveals it wasn't performing to spec. A written NMIM (National Metrology Institute of Malaysia) Gauss Calibration Certificate — with the actual measured field strength against traceable reference standards — is the only way to confirm performance rather than assume it.

Setting a Renewal Cycle

Calibration frequency should match your compliance and risk profile rather than a generic default. Food and pharmaceutical operations working to BRC, HACCP, or specific customer/export audit requirements typically need calibration on a defined annual (or shorter) cycle to keep documentation current for audit purposes. General industrial or minerals-processing applications without a specific external compliance driver can often run a longer interval, but should still calibrate periodically rather than never — since the alternative is discovering degraded performance only after a contamination event.

Planning the Calibration Timeline

Calibration turnaround runs through the SIRIM queue for equipment calibration and can take anywhere from approximately 2 weeks to 2 months from the date the work order is submitted, depending on queue capacity at the time. Build this lead time into your renewal planning well ahead of your certificate's expiry — don't wait until a certificate has already lapsed to submit for renewal, particularly if an active audit or customer requirement depends on a current certificate being on file.

What a Proper Calibration Certificate Should Show

A calibration certificate worth relying on for audit purposes should document: equipment identification, the reference standards or test method used, the measured Gauss reading against the specified rating, pass/fail determination, calibration date, and next due date. A certificate missing any of these gives you a document, but not a usable audit trail.

Common Faults and What They Usually Mean

Visibly reduced capture of ferrous debris. If material that would previously have been captured is now passing through, this is the clearest sign of reduced magnetic strength — schedule a Gauss verification rather than assuming a mechanical fault.

Contamination building up faster than expected, or not clearing between cleans. On a grate configuration, check that the bars are fully accessible and being cleaned to the full extent of the magnetic field, not just the visible surface. On a drawer configuration, confirm the cassette is being withdrawn fully during cleaning — partial withdrawal leaves captured material and reduces effective capacity on the next pass.

Housing or flange corrosion or seal degradation. In washdown or humid environments, inspect the SS304 housing and flange seal periodically — corrosion at the seal can allow bypass around the magnetic field, which looks like reduced performance even when the magnet itself is unaffected.

A magnet approaching or exceeding its rated operating temperature. Magnetic field strength is temperature-sensitive, and exposure above the rated limit (typically below 80°C for standard units) can cause permanent field loss, not just temporary reduction. If the installation point sits near a heat source, verify actual process temperature against the unit's rating.

Spare Parts and Ongoing Support

Housing seals, flange hardware, and — in cases of magnet damage or confirmed degraded performance — the magnetic bar assembly itself are the components most likely to need replacement over the life of a unit.
