Metal detection and X-ray inspection get grouped together as "contamination control," but they're not interchangeable. A metal detector is cheaper, simpler, and catches most metal contamination reliably. X-ray inspection costs more but sees categories of contaminant — and packaging types — that a metal detector physically cannot. Knowing exactly where that line falls is what determines which one your product actually needs.

A metal detector is a metal specialist — it is very good at what it does, but it does one thing. X-ray inspection uses density differences to see a much wider range of contaminants, and critically, it sees through packaging materials — foil, aluminium, metalised film — that block a metal detector's signal entirely.

When a Metal Detector Is Enough

If your product's realistic contamination risk is limited to ferrous, non-ferrous, or stainless steel — and your packaging isn't foil or metalised film — a metal detector, in gravity-fall (bulk stream) or inline conveyor (finished package) configuration, covers the risk at a lower cost and simpler footprint than X-ray. This describes a large share of bulk material handling and standard-packaging lines in fertilizer, oleochemical, plastics, and general chemical processing.

When You Need X-ray Instead — or as Well

X-ray inspection becomes necessary, not just nice to have, when any of the following apply: the product is packaged in foil or metalised film (a metal detector can't see through it reliably); the contamination risk includes glass, stone, bone, or dense plastic (a metal detector doesn't detect these categories at all); your export market's regulatory requirements specify X-ray-level inspection; or you need mass-comparison capability to catch missing or broken product components as part of the same inspection pass.

Many food and pharmaceutical lines run both — a metal detector early or inline as a cost-effective first pass, with X-ray as the final checkpoint where the fuller contaminant range and packaging compatibility matter most.
