Vacuum pneumatic conveying systems have fewer moving parts than mechanical conveyors, but the faults that do occur can be less obvious to diagnose because the material path is inside sealed pipework. Here are the six most common, what to check first, and when a repair should turn into a retrofit conversation instead.
1. Declining Conveying Capacity
Gradual capacity loss usually points to filter media blinding (reducing effective airflow) or developing wear in the vacuum source itself. Check filter cleaning cycle performance first — a pulse-jet or shaker system not clearing the filter effectively will choke airflow well before the vacuum pump shows any fault of its own.
2. Filter Blinding or Reduced Cleaning Effectiveness
If cleaning cycles aren't restoring filter performance, check for filter media damage or a cleaning system fault (pulse-jet air supply pressure, shaker mechanism wear) before assuming the filter itself needs replacement. Fine or moisture-sensitive materials can also blind filter media faster than expected if the material's actual particle size or moisture content differs from what the system was originally specified for.
3. Material Blockage in Pipework
Blockages usually occur at bends or where pipe diameter transitions, and are more likely with material that's more cohesive, moist, or coarser than what the system was designed for. If blockages are recurring at the same point, that's a design mismatch worth flagging to your supplier rather than a one-off operational issue.
4. Vacuum Pump or Blower Wear
Reduced vacuum performance despite a clean filter usually points to internal wear in the vacuum source — vane wear in rotary vane pumps, or bearing wear in regenerative blowers. Unusual noise or vibration at the vacuum source is worth investigating during scheduled downtime rather than waiting for a full failure.
5. Pickup Point Sequencing Faults (Multi-Point Systems)
For systems drawing from multiple pickup points, sequencing faults — a valve not opening or closing correctly, or a pickup point being skipped — usually trace back to the control system or a specific valve actuator rather than the vacuum source. Isolate the affected pickup point before assuming a system-wide fault.
6. Pipe Wear at Bends (Abrasive Material Applications)
For conveying systems handling abrasive material, pipe bend wear is a routine maintenance item, not an exception. Periodic inspection at accessible bend points is the simplest early check; if wear is progressing faster than expected for your material and duty cycle, that's worth flagging to your supplier.
When to Call for Support vs. When to Consider a Retrofit
The checks above cover routine wear and setup issues a technician can usually resolve on-site. If your system is aging and facing recurring filter or pipe-bend replacement, declining capacity that maintenance doesn't restore, or a vacuum source that's undersized for current production demands, it may be more cost-effective to retrofit than to keep replacing parts on a system that's outgrown its duty.
Spare Parts and Ongoing Support
Filter media, vacuum pump components, and pipe bend sections are the parts most likely to need replacement over a pneumatic conveying system's service life, particularly in abrasive-material applications.
