A rotary feeder's whole job is maintaining a seal while metering material, so most faults show up as either a pressure/leakage problem or a metering/jamming problem. Here are six common issues, what to check first, and when a repair should turn into a retrofit conversation.
1. Pressure Differential Not Holding
If your conveying system is losing pressure at the valve, check rotor-to-housing clearance and shaft seal condition first — wear on either is the most common cause of pressure leakage, well ahead of a housing or structural fault.
2. Rotor Jamming or Binding
A rotor that jams or binds usually points to oversized material or tramp contamination caught between rotor and housing, or thermal expansion in a high-temperature application closing up clearances that were set for ambient conditions. Check for foreign material first, then verify operating temperature is within the valve's rated range.
3. Uneven or Reduced Throughput
A drop in actual metered throughput at an unchanged RPM setting usually traces to rotor vane wear (reducing effective pocket volume) or a change in material bulk density affecting fill efficiency — not necessarily a valve fault. Compare current material properties against original sizing data before assuming mechanical wear.
4. Excessive Noise or Vibration
Grinding or knocking typically points to bearing wear, rotor imbalance from uneven wear, or material buildup on the rotor. Isolate the source before continued operation — running with a compromised bearing risks more extensive drive damage.
5. Seal or Vane Wear on Abrasive Materials
Faster-than-expected vane or seal wear on abrasive materials usually means the rotor coating or construction material specified wasn't sufficiently matched to the material's abrasiveness. This is a specification issue worth raising with your supplier — a coating or material upgrade (tungsten, ceramic, hard chrome) is often the fix rather than more frequent part replacement of the same components.
6. Motor Overload or Drive Tripping
An overloaded drive usually indicates the valve is handling more material or higher back-pressure than it was sized for, or a mechanical obstruction inside the housing. Check for obstruction first, then reassess whether current operating conditions still match original sizing.
When to Call for Support vs. When to Consider a Retrofit
The checks above cover routine wear and setup issues typically resolved on-site. If your valve is aging and facing recurring seal or vane wear, can't maintain pressure differential on a system that's grown in demand, or the rotor design no longer suits a changed material, it may be time for a retrofit — rotor upgrade, seal replacement, or coating upgrade — rather than continuing to work around the limitation.
