Screw conveyors are mechanically simple compared to most process equipment, which means most faults trace back to a small set of wear items or setup issues. Here are the six most common, what to check first, and when a repair should turn into a retrofit conversation instead.
1. Material Spillage at the Trough Cover or Inlet
Spillage that's developed gradually usually means trough cover seals have worn or a cover section isn't seated properly — check for gaps along the length of the trough, not just at the inlet. If spillage is new and sudden, check for an overfill condition upstream rather than assuming a seal fault.
2. Conveyor Jamming or Stalling Under Load
Jamming is often material-related — moisture content, particle size, or feed rate exceeding what the screw pitch and speed were sized for. If the material hasn't changed, check hanger bearing condition; a seized or badly worn hanger bearing increases resistance enough to cause intermittent stalling before it fails outright.
3. Hanger Bearing Wear or Failure
Hanger bearings are the most frequently replaced wear component on a screw conveyor, especially in abrasive-material service. Listen for unusual noise or vibration at bearing locations during operation, and inspect for visible wear during scheduled shutdowns rather than waiting for failure, which can damage the screw shaft itself.
4. Trough Liner Wear (Abrasive Material Applications)
For conveyors handling abrasive material, trough liner wear is a routine maintenance item, not an exception. Periodic visual inspection at accessible points is the simplest early check; if wear is progressing faster than expected for your material and duty cycle, that's worth flagging to your supplier rather than just replacing liners reactively.
5. Drive or Gearmotor Faults
Unusual noise, overheating, or reduced torque at the gearmotor usually points to either a lubrication issue or developing internal wear. Confirm the gearmotor is running within its rated load — an undersized drive relative to actual duty is a design issue, not a maintenance one, and won't be fixed by more frequent servicing.
6. Screw Shaft or Flight Damage
Visible flight damage or shaft misalignment is usually caused by an oversized foreign object entering the trough, or a hanger bearing failure that went unaddressed long enough to affect the shaft. This is typically a parts-replacement repair rather than something to work around.
When to Call for Support vs. When to Consider a Retrofit
The checks above cover routine wear and setup issues a technician can usually resolve on-site. If your conveyor is aging and facing recurring wear-part replacement, declining throughput, or a drive that's undersized for current production demands, it may be more cost-effective to retrofit — wear-resistant lining, a VFD drive upgrade, or trough reconditioning — than to keep replacing parts on a unit that's fundamentally outgrown its duty.

Screw flights, hanger bearings, and trough liners are the parts most likely to need replacement over a screw conveyor's service life, particularly in abrasive-material applications.
