Most conveying decisions come down to throughput and layout. But for a specific category of material — fragile granules, sticky or hygroscopic powders, high-purity ingredients, or hazardous dusts — the deciding factor is exposure: how much contact the material has with open air, mechanical agitation, and the surrounding plant environment during transfer.

Where Open and Semi-Open Conveying Falls Short

Air exposure changes the material. Hygroscopic materials pick up moisture from ambient air during any open transfer step, which can affect flowability, caking tendency, or product shelf life by the time it reaches the next process stage.

Mechanical agitation degrades fragile products. Belt and screw conveyors both handle material with some degree of mechanical action — being carried, pushed, or occasionally dropped at transfer points. For fragile or friable materials, that's fines generation and yield loss.

Open transfer points are contamination risk. For high-purity ingredients — pharmaceutical APIs, food-grade materials, sensitive chemical intermediates — every open transfer point is a place foreign material can enter or product can be exposed to an uncontrolled atmosphere.

Dusty or hazardous materials need full containment, not partial. A covered belt or a U-trough screw conveyor reduces dust escape, but doesn't eliminate it the way a fully sealed system does — and for explosive or toxic dusts, partial containment isn't a real solution.

Where the Tubular Chain Conveyor Fits

A tubular chain conveyor moves material through fully enclosed, multi-plane conveying — a continuous chain fitted with disc flights running through a sealed pipe, capable of routing horizontally, vertically, and diagonally in a single continuous system. On ENZAC's standard range, pipe diameter runs 100–500mm, with up to 60 metres of horizontal distance and 20 metres of vertical distance covered without intermediate transfer points.

Because the system is fully enclosed, dust emission is zero and there's no moisture pickup — no air exposure during transit, so no risk of product aeration or hygroscopic moisture gain. The chain-and-flight mechanism runs at low velocity, which means gentle handling and minimal degradation compared to higher-speed mechanical or pneumatic alternatives — a real advantage for fragile, sticky, or fibrous materials that don't tolerate rough handling. And unlike pneumatic conveying, it needs no compressed air supply, which simplifies utilities and reduces running cost.

This makes it a natural fit for oleochemical materials like soap noodles and fatty acids, food ingredients sensitive to moisture or contamination, chemical and explosive dusts needing full containment, and pharmaceutical APIs or excipients where purity is non-negotiable.

Where a Tubular Chain Conveyor Isn't the Right Answer

The gentle, low-velocity nature that makes tubular chain conveying suitable for sensitive materials also means it isn't the right choice for very high-throughput bulk transfer, where a belt conveyor or pneumatic system will move more tonnage per hour more cost-effectively. And for straightforward, non-sensitive materials where full containment isn't actually required, the added cost and complexity of a sealed multi-plane system isn't justified.
