An FIBC filling system that's running well should need very little day-to-day attention. When it doesn't, the cause is usually one of a small set of recurring issues — most of which a maintenance technician can diagnose on-site before escalating to a service callout. Here are the six most common, what typically causes them, and when it's worth calling for support instead.
1. Inconsistent Fill Weights
If bag weights are drifting outside tolerance, start with the load cells. Check for physical damage, loose mounting, or material buildup on the weighing platform that's throwing off the tare reading. Vibration from nearby equipment can also introduce noise into the signal — confirm isolation mounts are intact. If load cells check out mechanically, the issue may be a calibration drift rather than a hardware fault; load cell accuracy shifts with use and time, which is why periodic calibration verification matters even when nothing seems visibly wrong.
2. Slow or Incomplete Bag Discharge
Poor flow at the spout is often a material issue rather than an equipment fault — check for bridging or ratholing in the hopper above the filling head, especially with fine or cohesive powders. If the material flows fine elsewhere on the line, inspect the fill head and spout clamp for buildup or wear, and confirm the bag inflation/massaging function (if fitted) is actually cycling.
3. Bag Spout Doesn't Seal Properly Against the Fill Head
A poor seal usually traces to spout clamp wear, incorrect clamp pressure setting, or a mismatch between bag spout diameter and fill head size — this last one is common when switching bag suppliers without rechecking spec compatibility. Inspect the clamp seal surface for wear or debris before assuming it's a mechanical fault.
4. PLC/HMI Faults or Unresponsive Controls
Power cycle the control panel first — this resolves a surprising number of transient faults. If the issue persists, check for loose terminal connections in the control cabinet (vibration loosens these over time on continuously-running lines) and confirm no fault codes are logged on the HMI that point to a specific sensor or actuator.
5. Fill Cycle Timing Drift
If cycle times are creeping longer without a clear mechanical cause, check pneumatic system pressure — a slow air leak or a partially clogged filter/regulator reduces actuator speed gradually enough that operators often don't notice until it's significantly off from commissioning baseline.
6. Frame or Structural Vibration Under Load
New or worsening vibration usually means a mounting bolt has loosened, a bearing is wearing, or the unit's foundation has shifted slightly. Left unaddressed, this accelerates wear on everything downstream of it — worth investigating promptly rather than working around it.
When to Call for Support vs. When to Escalate
The checks above cover the issues a technician can usually diagnose without special tooling. Escalate to your supplier when: a fault recurs after you've addressed the obvious cause, load cell calibration is due or in question, or the fix requires a part you don't have in stock.

Load cells, clamp seals, pneumatic components, and control electronics are the parts most likely to need replacement over an FIBC filling system's service life.
