IBCs are simple compared to powered equipment, but issues in outlet valves, container condition, or reuse practices can still cause real product loss and safety risk. Here's what to check first.

1. Outlet Valve Leaking or Not Sealing

A leaking or poorly sealing butterfly valve usually points to seal wear, a damaged valve seat, or debris caught in the valve mechanism from a previous fill. Inspect and clean the valve seat before assuming the valve itself needs replacement — buildup from a previous product is a common and easily fixed cause.

2. Slow or Restricted Discharge

If discharge is slower than expected, check whether the outlet valve size (DN50 vs DN80) actually matches your material's viscosity and required rate — a mismatch that wasn't caught at specification time will show up as a persistent bottleneck rather than an occasional issue. Also check for partial blockage at the outlet from settled or crystallised material.

3. Cross-Contamination Between Reuse Cycles

Product carryover between different materials in a reused container points to an inadequate cleaning validation step between cycles. If containers are shared across multiple products, a documented cleaning and inspection procedure between each reuse is essential — not an occasional precaution.

4. Container Deformation or Softening

Visible deformation or softening of the HDPE inner container usually points to a temperature exceedance during fill or storage, or a material compatibility issue that wasn't caught before use. Check both against the container's rated temperature limit (materials exceeding 80°C continuously are outside the standard specification) and your material's actual chemical compatibility with HDPE.

5. Stacking or Pallet Failure

Structural failure during stacking or handling usually traces back to exceeding the rated stack height (2–3 units), stacking on damaged or non-standard pallets, or a container that's already structurally compromised from a previous impact. Inspect pallet and cage condition before every stacking cycle, not just at initial receipt.

When to Retire a Container Rather Than Repair It

Outlet valves and seals can typically be repaired or replaced. Visible cracking, deformation, or structural damage to the inner container or cage is a retirement decision, not a repair one — continuing to use a structurally compromised IBC risks product loss and, depending on the material, a safety incident.
