Bucket elevators look interchangeable from the outside — buckets on a belt or chain, lifting material vertically — but the discharge method built into the design has a real effect on product degradation, and getting it wrong shows up as unnecessary fines, breakage, or wear that a correctly specified elevator wouldn't have caused.

Centrifugal Discharge

Buckets are spaced along the belt or chain and travel at speed around the head pulley; material is thrown out of the bucket by centrifugal force as it rounds the top. This is the standard, higher-speed discharge method.

Best fit: free-flowing granules and powders that tolerate the mechanical action of being thrown out at speed — most general bulk materials in fertilizer, minerals, and plastics handling.

Where it falls short: materials sensitive to impact or attrition (friable pellets, coated products, fragile granules) can degrade measurably from the throwing action, showing up as increased fines or dust downstream.

Continuous (Gentle) Discharge

Buckets are mounted continuously and closely spaced, running at lower speed; material discharges by guided flow over the preceding bucket rather than being thrown by centrifugal force. This is the gentler handling option.

Best fit: friable, fragile, or degradation-sensitive materials — food ingredients, coated products, or any material where fines generation directly costs you product quality or yield.

Where it falls short: continuous discharge elevators typically run at lower capacity for a given size than a centrifugal design, and are a higher-cost option where gentle handling isn't actually required by the material.

The Z-Type Configuration (Applies to Both)

Independent of discharge method, ENZAC's bucket elevators are commonly configured as Z-type units — receiving material at floor level, conveying it horizontally, then lifting vertically to the discharge point without intermediate transfers. This layout flexibility is a separate decision from centrifugal vs. continuous discharge, and the two should be specified together against your actual site layout and material.
