A pallet dispenser is mechanically simple compared to the palletizer it feeds, which means most faults trace back to a small set of causes. Here's what to check first.
1. Pallet Jamming in the Magazine
Jamming during descent through the magazine usually points to pallet dimension inconsistency (particularly with wood pallets), damaged pallets with protruding boards or nails, or debris built up in the magazine track. Inspect incoming pallet condition before assuming a mechanical fault — a batch of out-of-spec or damaged pallets is a common and easily identified cause.
2. Double-Feeding or Missed Feeds
A dispenser releasing two pallets at once, or failing to release one on cycle, usually points to separator or gripper wear at the dispensing mechanism, or a sensor misreading pallet position. Check separator condition and sensor alignment before escalating — this is typically a wear or calibration issue rather than a structural fault.
3. Pallet Misposition on the Infeed Conveyor
If pallets are reaching the palletizer out of the position it expects — causing stacking pattern errors that trace back to infeed rather than the palletizer arm — check conveyor alignment and positioning sensor calibration between the dispenser and the palletizer. This is a common root cause of stacking errors that get misdiagnosed as a palletizer fault when the actual issue is upstream.
4. Dispenser Not Keeping Pace With Palletizer
If the palletizer is running below its rated cycle time because it's waiting on pallets, check the dispenser's feed rate against the palletizer's actual consumption rate — this can be a sign the dispenser was undersized for the palletizer's speed at specification time, not a maintenance issue, and may need a mechanical or capacity review rather than a repair.
5. Sensor or Control Faults
Position sensors at the dispenser and infeed conveyor can be affected by dust, misalignment, or wiring issues before registering as an outright failure — similar to sensor issues elsewhere on the palletizing line. Cleaning and alignment checks are the first troubleshooting step before assuming sensor replacement is needed.
When to Call for Support vs. Consider a Retrofit
The checks above cover routine wear and setup issues that account for most dispenser faults.
