The single biggest design decision on a bulk storage silo isn't capacity — it's bottom geometry, because it determines whether your material actually discharges reliably or becomes a recurring flow problem. ENZAC supplies both configurations; here's how they compare.

Cone Bottom Silo

A cone bottom silo (60° half-angle) is designed for mass flow — the entire mass of material moves uniformly toward the outlet, in the order it was loaded. This is the configuration that delivers true first-in-first-out (FIFO) discharge, which matters for materials with shelf life, moisture sensitivity, or batch traceability requirements. Mass flow also avoids the stagnant zones where cohesive material can degrade, cake, or bridge over time.

The trade-off is footprint and cost: the steep cone adds height (or requires a support structure) that a flat bottom doesn't need, and the additional steel and structural design add cost. For cohesive materials — fine powders, materials with binder content, anything prone to bridging or rat-holing in a flat-bottom vessel — this cost is what buys reliable discharge instead of a recurring operational problem.

Flat Bottom Silo

A flat bottom silo is the lower-cost, lower-footprint option, and it works well for free-flowing granules that don't need flow assistance to reach the outlet. For materials that are more cohesive, a flat bottom needs aeration pads or vibration assistance to keep material moving — which adds equipment and energy cost that partially offsets the lower structural cost, and doesn't guarantee true FIFO discharge the way a cone bottom does.

Flat bottom silos are the right call when capacity and footprint matter more than discharge order, and your material is genuinely free-flowing enough not to need aeration to move reliably.

The deciding factor isn't preference or budget alone — it's whether your material flows freely on its own. A material that looks free-flowing in a small sample can behave very differently at silo scale under its own compacted weight, which is why flow properties (not just bulk density) should be part of the material data reviewed before committing to a bottom geometry.
