Storing bulk powder or granular material sounds like the passive part of a process — a place material sits between production steps. In practice, a poorly matched storage silo is where a lot of downstream problems start: material that won't discharge reliably, product that's degraded by the time it's used, and dust or contamination issues that shouldn't be happening in an enclosed vessel.

Where Bulk Storage Goes Wrong

Bridging and rat-holing stall discharge. Cohesive materials can form a stable arch (bridging) above the outlet, or channel a narrow flow path through the centre while material along the walls stays stagnant (rat-holing). Both stop your process getting the material it needs on demand — and both are a design and material-interaction issue, not something you fix by hitting the silo wall harder.

Wrong bottom geometry for the material. A flat-bottom silo is cheaper, but it relies on aeration or vibration to move cohesive material toward the outlet — install one for a material that needs true mass flow, and you've built in a flow problem from day one.

No FIFO control on materials that need it. Without a mass-flow design, material can sit in stagnant zones for months while newer material discharges first — a real problem for anything with shelf life, moisture sensitivity, or batch traceability requirements.

Level sensing that doesn't match the material. Ultrasonic sensing struggles with dusty atmospheres; capacitance probes can misread on some material dielectric properties. A level sensor chosen without matching to the actual material gives you unreliable inventory data — which cascades into either running out unexpectedly or over-ordering to compensate.

Corrosion or product contamination from the wrong construction material. Mild steel is fine for many materials but wrong for corrosive or hygienic-grade applications — leading to product contamination, structural degradation, or both over time.

Where a Properly Specified Silo Fits

ENZAC supplies bulk storage silos from 5 tonnes up to 10,000+ tonnes, sized to your throughput and buffer requirements, in mild steel (epoxy lined), SS304, SS316, or hot-dip galvanised construction depending on your material and hygiene requirements. The critical design decision is bottom geometry: a cone bottom (60° half-angle) gives true mass flow discharge and proper FIFO — the right call for cohesive materials or anything with shelf-life or traceability needs. A flat bottom is the lower-cost option, workable for free-flowing granules but dependent on aeration or vibration assistance for anything more cohesive.

Level sensing (ultrasonic, radar, vibrating paddle, or capacitance probe), discharge valve type (rotary valve, slide gate, butterfly valve, or screw conveyor), and roof venting are all matched to the material and application — not defaulted to a standard configuration regardless of what's going into the silo.

Getting the Spec Right From the Start
