Once capacity, construction material, and bottom geometry are settled, the remaining questions are practical: what drives the final cost, how long does fabrication and installation actually take, and what support looks like once the silo is in service.
What Drives Cost
Capacity. Cost scales with tonnage and diameter, but not perfectly linearly — larger silos carry proportionally more structural and foundation cost per tonne of capacity at the upper end of the range.
Bottom geometry. A cone bottom costs more than a flat bottom of equivalent capacity, due to the additional steel and structural design needed for the steeper geometry — but for cohesive materials, this is what buys reliable discharge rather than a recurring flow problem.
Construction material. SS316 costs more than SS304, which costs more than epoxy-lined mild steel or hot-dip galvanised — driven by your material's corrosivity and hygiene requirements, not a default preference.
Ancillary equipment. Level sensing technology, discharge valve type, aeration systems, and roof venting all add to the base structural cost, and should be speced against your actual material rather than added generically.
Installation and Commissioning Timeline
Silo installation is structural work: foundation preparation, fabrication (often in sections for larger units), erection, and integration of level sensing, discharge valves, and venting. Ask for a realistic timeline broken into design and structural engineering, fabrication, delivery, erection, and commissioning — silo projects have longer lead times than most process equipment due to the structural engineering and fabrication involved, and a single lump-sum estimate usually hides this.
Confirming the Design Holds Up on Your Material
A silo's rated capacity and flow performance assume your material behaves as specified. Confirm your supplier has reviewed your actual material's flow properties — not just bulk density — before finalising bottom geometry, and that commissioning includes verifying discharge performance with your actual material, not just a structural sign-off.
After-Sales Support to Confirm Before You Sign
- Spare parts — discharge valve components, level sensor units, and aeration pads are what typically need attention over service life. Confirm stock availability and lead time.
- Service and maintenance — scheduled inspection of structural condition, discharge valve function, level sensor calibration, and venting system condition. Confirm response time for issues affecting discharge reliability.
- Retrofit and upgrade — for an existing silo with a flow problem, confirm whether adding aeration, upgrading level sensing, or modifying the discharge configuration is possible without full replacement.
